Vertical Axis Wind Turbine
Maybe, you know a lot about the wind turbines as they have gained enormous popularity for the past several years. You know that the global warming problem (and its solution) have become one of the most commented issues and it was concluded that the best way for solving the problem is by using alternative sources of energy (mainly solar and wind energy). Obviously, the wind turbines play an important role but you may not have heard that there are many kinds of turbines generating electricity from the wind power. One of the most renowned, for example, is the vertical axis wind turbine.
Do not worry if it does not say much to you since the ones who are usually familiar with this sort of wind turbines, are the scientists. However, a vertical axis wind turbine is considered to offer a lot of advantages over the ‘already-known’ ones. For instance, the latest research shows that it is much more efficient and cost-effective when compared to most of the other wind turbines, some of which, you have certainly seen. Another great thing about the vertical turbine is that it is not as much affected by the surrounding objects. Of course, its location is still important but there are not requirements for assembling the turbine in a place where it would be two times higher than anything else.
Anyway what the investors seem to show most interest in when a vertical axis wind turbine is mentioned is something else. Of course they still care about the efficiency and indexes like that but what the large investors really seem to love about this kind of wind turbines is their ability to be ‘packed densely’. That is a great advantage, especially when it comes to building and ‘growing’ the so called farms of wind turbines. It has been calculated that if using vertical wind turbines will allow to the farm’s owner build 30% more of them in 1 square kilometer. And that really is a lot!
But a vertical axis wind turbine also is easier-to-maintain since it is located closer to the ground- it just does not need to be as high as the traditional turbines because it does not need as much wind as they do. And as the ground has been mentioned, you should also be informed that the vertical wind turbines do not do any harm to the soil and the ground whereas the traditional turbines have been discovered to have a negative affect.
