Wind Turbine Control System

One popular misconception about wind turbines is that they need no support whatsoever. Some people seem to think that they’re just magic machines that suck in air and turn it into electricity. While this is essentially what they do for a layman’s perspectives, they’re just a little bit more complicated than that, because they are in fact machines, and thus every turbine must have some kind of wind turbine control system. For some, the wind turbine control system can be something as simple as a bunch of mounds of copper wire and transistors stapled to a plywood board. However for others it can be an entire room of levers and pulleys and flashy colored buttons. The bigger and more sophisticated the turbine, the more sophisticated the wind turbine control system has to be in order to keep track of it. People still may think that this system may be unnecessary or feel a little skeptical. After all, some of our least complicated control systems are essentially just little things you plug into a wall outlets that require almost no intelligence to work, but the control system is the most important part. For many larger turbines, usually the ones housed at wind farms, these control systems are pretty sophisticated, having raising or lowering controls, things to manually alter the speed once they are spinning, to alter the temperature if it feels like it is overheating, and countless other ways of controlling the device and ways of controlling where the electrical current is going.

For smaller devices though it is much simpler. People can understand why the big ones are complicated, because they’re bigger. The greater size equals more complication equation is not too hard for people to relate to. But some people might think that it is still easier to just use as little as possible and just throw some copper wire from the tip of the blades to a battery and see if that will help it charge. It doesn’t work that way. Even if you could manage to set it up where it all traveled from one wire just due simply to motion rather than a battery or anything like that, you would still need a way of making sure that battery or device the electricity was going to didn’t overload or explode from unmitigated electricity flowing into it. And this is where the transistors come in. They divert charge from an already fully charged battery into one that is not as charged and will hold on to the electricity and essentially “dump” it if it is not being used. It may look rudimentary but it is sophisticated in a way still and that is what is needed in a serious project like this.
